Shout out to Rutherford Pub locals for supporting World's Greatest Shave

In a great display of community solidarity, locals gathered at the New England Highway watering hole to have their heads shaved all in the name of cancer research.

With a goal of raising $1000, event organiser Emma Rodgers was blown away when $2386 had been banked. With Rutherford Hotel matching that amount the final total was taken to $4772.

Ms Rodgers said about 100 people attended the event, many making it a family day out.

She gave a big shout out to Brandy Hill woman Meredith Ross who is a cancer survivor. She came to the hotel to support the day and shave off her long locks.

“I really have to thank our sponsors Tooheys, Woodstock, Fosters and Devotion to Hair from Telarah who donated a raffle prize and gave up their time on a Sunday to come in with their clippers.

“We also have to thank our locals Knoxy, Duffo, Jim Hickey and John Robinson’s firm Elite Constructions for their input on the day.”

Ms Rodgers hopes the event will become an annual attraction at the hotel so more money can be raised for worthy causes.

In Newcastle Tina Dottori knew she was in for something special when she saw her boyfriend Paul Oakes take to the floor and propose.

Ms Dottori, 24, had raised more than $1330 in sponsorship to have her waist-long hair cut at The Squire’s Maiden on Sunday as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.

Her mother and younger sister were watching online from her native Argentina.

Firefighter Mr Oakes said he wanted to propose in public in front of the couple’s friends.  “It shows you’re not afraid to tell the world ‘this is who I love’ – it’s how love is meant to be celebrated.”
