The nine-year-old was diagnosed with a rare epithelioid sarcoma last December after a lump was found through an unrelated x-ray.
He has had five rounds of chemotherapy and will have surgery next month.
Ben’s mum, Claire Allen, said they put the call out to friends and family to send caps when the nine-year-old started chemotherapy and “it went a bit viral after that”.
“It started off because he was worried about losing his hair and I said, ‘We’ll get you a cap’, and they started coming in,” Ms Allen said.
Now there is well over 500.
“After he’s made his selection, we’ll be giving additional hats to the John Hunter [Hospital] oncology department for other kids,” Ms Allen said. “John Hunter paediatric oncology unit have been awesome, and we’ve been getting a lot of support from Camp Quality and Redkite.”
