The Easter Bunny was there to shoot a music video, paint rabbit faces on kids in the area and pose for pictures.
It was all in the name of fundraising and community spirit and is not expected to be the last pop-up appearance by the Easter Bunny before the holidays are over.
Inside the suit was Maryville’s Dannielle Owen, aka Danni Glitterbug, who told The Star “I’m doing it to hopefully bring smiles to the faces of people in the community”.
For every face she paints as a bunny rabbit then takes a picture and posts to facebook, an anonymous do-gooder will donate $50 to charity.
Ms Owen has chosen The Starlight Foundation, Kids With Cancer Foundation and Camp Quality to benefit from her good deeds this Easter.
“In 2015 I face-painted at a birthday for a gentleman and his wife,” Ms Owen said. “After that they saw me be a bunny at an event for a school and he said, ‘What about I give you some tasks to do in your rabbit outfit and every time you do a task we’ll put money into an account to use for charity’.
“Task one was to have my photo taken with well-known people of Newcastle. Task two was to go up Darby Street and hand out Easter eggs, then task three was to do a music video around Newcastle in iconic spots.”
She was up to her bunny antics against last year and is doing the tasks for one final time this Easter.
Ms Owen estimates around $4000 has been donated to charity in the past two years.
“It’s just something that is nice to put back into the community and I love doing it,” the Genesis creche supervisor said. “My husband and I, we could never have kids, and I love my job working with kids.
“I just love doing it to make people happy. I’ve always been an upbeat person and I will dress up as anything if you want me to if it’s going to raise money for a worthwhile cause.
“It’s about putting something back into the community because there are so many charities out there that need help.”
