The exhibition recognises a vital but less-recognised aspect of art history and the contribution of women in the development of Australian abstract art.
Taking audiences on a journey from the early 20th century through to the present day, Abstraction features rarely displayed masterworks from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.
Abstraction is one of the most influential developments in art history and in Australia it was progressive modernist women, starting in the 1920s, who were at the forefront of its development, moving away from the dominance of landscape and portraiture traditions.
The contribution of women to this important and influential art movement has, until recently, often been obscured.
Abstraction will be on from May 21 until June 23. Entry is $10, children under 12 are free.
