Tom Cruise has finally confirmed that a sequel to the cult action film Top Gun is in the works.
Rumours have been swirling for years that Cruise would revisit the movie that turned him into a household name. Last year, the film's original producer Jerry Bruckheimer drove fans wild after tweeting a photo of himself and Cruise, hinting that they met up to discuss a Top Gun sequel.
On Tuesday morning, Cruise finally confirmed that the rumours were indeed true. Speaking on Channel 7's Sunrise, the Hollywood heartthrob said principal photography should start within the next 12 months.
"It's true," he said. "I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. It is definitely happening."

Despite mixed reviews, the original Top Gun was a massive success a the box office - earning more than $450 million worldwide against a budget of less than $30 million. The movie also snapped up an Oscar for Best Original Song.
Cruise is currently in Australia promoting the release of the latest film in The Mummy franchise, which hits cinemas on June 8.
