NEW BEATS
BEATS produced in a Hunter bedroom could soon be banging in the nightclubs of Europe, after Newcastle’s Phil Christiansen inked a three-year contract with Germany’s Big Mamas House Records.
Christiansen, who performs as DJ Critto, recently released his track Tener Exito (Maybe) through the label. The house track features the vocals of Russian Julia Turano and will be included on a compilation album next month for the Croatia Summer Festival.
It’s been a remarkable rise for DJ Critto. The former Gold Coast Seagulls recruit and Newcastle Rugby League first-grader developed a passion for electronic house music eight years ago. After becoming heavily involved in mixing, four years ago Christiansen began producing his own tracks.
Breaking into the insular Sydney nightclub scene was difficult due to the abundance of resident DJs, so Christiansen focused his energy on building contacts through email in European’s massive EDM scene.
“I wanted to get away from the mixing side of things,” Christiansen said. “The only way was to start producing my own tracks. The phone calls and emails from the bigger boys is what I’ve been looking for over the last couple of years.
“I was kicking back for a little as it wasn’t coming to me, so I took it forward to promote myself a lot more. Now it’s come pretty quick.”
