I had a Kevin Costner moment on Monday while visiting the site of what will be a new sports and community hub at Cameron Park, to see the start of construction on the $15 million project.

Looking around the open space, it was exciting to imagine how it will look in about a year, when the new playground, sports fields and recreational areas are open for public use, and what a fantastic facility it will be for the Northlakes suburb’s rapidly growing population.
Build it and they will come, as the voice told Costner in the movie Field of Dreams. That is very much the story of Cameron Park, which grew out of the little hamlet of Estelville, under the shadow of Mount Sugarloaf. It was less than two decades ago that plans began to unfold for the development of the new residential area.
Fast forward to 2017, and Cameron Park is a thriving community of young families, retirees and everything in between. With a population of more than 5000, the area is expected to eventually accommodate about 12,000 people and 4000 homes.
The new facility will be named Pasterfield Sports complex in honour of the late former Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Geoff Pasterfield.
The project involves the development of a community centre, a mixed-use sports field catering for AFL and cricket, netball courts, a skate park, playgrounds, cycle paths and exercise equipment. This work will be undertaken by Scape Constructions.
