WPL: United, Bay into decider
They have been the form sides all year and now big guns Warners Bay and Merewether are on a grand final collision course after cruising through the second leg of their Herald Women’s Premier League semi-finals over the weekend.
Warners Bay, this year’s minor premiers and the league’s defending champions, beat Mid North Coast 3-0 at John Street Oval on Sunday for a 7-2 aggregate win across two legs.
United downed Adamstown 4-0 at Myamblah Oval on Saturday to finish 6-1 in their two-legged semi-final.
The victories were convincing in the end but the opposing grand final coaches both said they had plenty of room for improvement ahead of what is expected to be a fast-paced, high-tempo championship decider at Jack McLaughlan Oval, Edgeworth on August 20.
Netball: BNC oust Forsythes
BNC kept their title hopes alive with a 45-36 triumph over a depleted Forsythes Business Advisors in the Greater Open Netball Championship elimination semi-final at National Park on Saturday.
BNC will meet the loser of the major semi-final between minor premiers Wests Leagues Balance and defending champions Souths Lions, to be played on August 19 at 2.30pm.
AFL: Gosford, Maitland survive
Gosford killed off Killarney Vale with a 6.7 (43) to 2.2 (14) win and Maitland finished Wyong Lakes’ season in a 7.5 (47) to 4.1 (25) victory in the Women’s Black Diamond AFL elimination finals at Max McMahon Oval on Saturday.
Unbeaten minor premiers Newcastle City host Maitland on August 19 and defending champions Nelson Bay are at home to Gosford in the preliminary finals.
The winners advance to the grand final on August 26.
Rugby league: North win at home
North Newcastle drew level with Glenmore Park with a convincing 26-6 win over their top-four rivals at Passmore Oval on Sunday.
North and Glenmore have 18 points, two less than competition pace-setters Redfern and Mounties.
Alicia Martin, Cassie Ormsby, Jerry Burgmann, Isabelle Kelly and Alicia Martin all scored tries in the victory.
Leaguetag: Souths win
South Newcastle were 68-0 winners over Cessnock in Newcastle Rugby League Ladies Leaguetag on Saturday.
