Renee Cross started the Hunter Women’s Rugby Union movement in 1998 and felt it only fitting to recognise the many milestones in that time with a 20th anniversary event at Waratah Oval No.5 on August 27.

Cross played at Waratah when women’s rugby first came to the Hunter.
At its peak the competition grew to 12 teams in the early 2000s but has since been reduced back to four.
Cross has missed just one season since 1998 and was in the University side which went down 34-12 to Merewether Carlton in the HWRU grand final held on August 19.
It is just the second time the Greens have secured the Wal Fitzgerald Cup. They also won in 2005.
Merewether led 10-5 at half-time in this year’s decider before streaking away with the win.
The 20th anniversary celebrations will be held from 10am to 2pm and will feature Golden Oldies men’s, women’s and mixed matches as well as a schoolgirls sevens tournament.
The 2017 HWRU presentation will also be held.
