On the weekend, the Prime Minister shared a photo of himself holding his granddaughter and a cup of beer while watching his beloved Sydney Swans earn their place in the AFL semi-finals.

The sweet snap was captioned "multitasking at the footy". However, it took just hours for online news sites to run stories about Facebook commentators accusing the PM of "disgusting" behaviour.

On Thursday night's The Footy Show, Sam Newman was far from impressed. The former AFL player stormed onto set wearing a novelty drinking hat, clutching a pint of beer in one hand and a fake baby in the other.

"This country is rooted," he said. "Why would anyone worry about Malcolm Turnbull having a beer with his granddaughter sitting on his lap? This country..."

The live audience broke into applause, while Newman's co-hosts tried to stifle their laughter. Then, in classic Newman style, he turned his rant on himself.

"[They've] gone mad," he said. "If I brought a live baby on, would I have been accused of being a child molester or a paedophile by all those people who say I'm a sexist or homophobe? I was called a white supremacist the other day.

"It is only those people who call me those names who can't think of anything different to say and as soon as you do something, you are either a racist, a homophobe or a sexist."

Newman"s rant didn't stop arch-rival The Front Bar from coming out number one in Melbourne, with an average audience of 190,000 viewers in the Victorian capital compared to The Footy Show???'s 175,000.

However, The Footy Show still won the night overall with a combined average audience oif 269,000, just beating The Front Bar's 266,000.
