ON THE MOVE
PEPPERTOWN Coffee Bar manager Melody Moko has vowed to open another music-focused cafe, following the surprise announcement that the burgeoning venue is closing on Sunday.
Since Moko and her husband and fellow musician Michael Muchow took over the lease seven months ago from friends Natalie and Brock Henry, Americana and roots music has played an increasing role in the Mayfield business.
Local musicians Deanna Rose, Natalie Henry, Georgina Grimshaw and Whistle Dixie have performed at the venue and Australian country royalty Bill Chambers will headline Peppertown’s final jam night on Thursday.
Moko said her lease had expired and the owner was planning to take the venue in another direction.
“We definitely want to open another place as soon as possible in the Mayfield-Tighes Hill area, because it’s such a terrific community,” Moko said.
NAME CHANGE
THE Treehouse Children have grown up and become Olympic Fever.
The Newcastle five-piece aren’t simply changing their name, they’re also heading in a new sonic direction taking their jangly-guitar indie pop toward a more synth-based sound.
It’s an intriguing move from a band that has become one of Newcastle’s most popular underground acts in the past year through their energetic performances.
