The Newcastle representatives found rhythm in the one-foot peaks that kicked up in the qualifier, claiming a handful of wins across the Skins and Teams divisions to place first on the leaderboard.
Outstanding performances came from former junior series stars Travis Lynch, Mitchell Ross and Jackson Brent, and the points haul was enough to clear Avoca Boardriders – the second placed team – by 75 points.
The qualifying win was a proud moment for Merewether, as Lynch explained that this leg of the Boardriders series has always been a sticking point for the club.
“Merewether haven’t had the greatest luck when it comes to this event at Narrabeen, so we’re pumped to be able to seal the deal here today,” said Lynch.
“We were actually surprised to see waves here as there was nothing in Merewether when we left this morning, so I think that really frothed the team up to put on a good show.
“We’re pumped to be able to earn this spot into the national final, which is just around the corner from our local beach. We can’t wait.”
The best individual performance for the day came from Avoca surfer Kirra-Belle Olsson, who took out the Milwaukee Heavy Duty Hack award for a stellar performance in the females division off the back of the only perfect score in the event.
Joining Merewether in the National Final will be event runner-up and last year’s National Champions Avoca and the Teams division winner North Steyne who claimed second and respectively.
Merewether, defending National champions Avoca and Teams division winner North Steyne all now turn their eyes to the National final in Newcastle in February, where 24 of the state’s top clubs will contest the penultimate boardriders’ title for NSW.
