Cardiff Squash Centre has developed Power Squash, a faster format that allows players to call power players and power points during each 15-minute match.
Although traditional squash normally ends at certain scoring levels, and is a best of three or five series, Power Squash instead has unlimited scoring and is based off a 15 minute timer in each game.
The new format is now set to be tested with a 10-week Power Squash competition on the horizon, set to kick-off on October 10, and will be a mixed tournament.
“Power squash is about making the sport attractive to a new generation of players who want a shorter, more interesting format,’’ said Simon Ashley, owner of Cardiff Squash Centre.
“We’ve been trialling the new format for several months, and the players love the changes.’’
Each player can nominate a Power Play, enabling the caller to earn two points per winning rally over five successive points.
A power point can also be called once per match and enables the caller to instantly add five points to their score or deduct five points from their opponent’s.
Players are also awarded bonus points, from 10 to 40 extra points, for scoring up to 25 points, up to 50 points and up to 100 points per game.
Each round in the 10-week competition will see players compete in two 15 minute rounds against opponents on the way to Power Squash glory.
