A Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage facility has been proposed for Kooragang Island, with the project being touted as vital in providing a "secure energy source" for the city.

Newcastle developer Mitchell Sovechles has lodged a $2 million application with the Department of Planning to construct the facility at the existing service centre on Cormorant Road.
Developed by Mr Sovechles in 2015, the centre already includes a Shell service station, Coolabah diner and Baywash car wash.
The purpose-built LPG facility has been earmarked for undeveloped land at the northern end of the site, with access off Egret Street.
It would include a 'fireproofed' 50-tonne storage tank, a 4.5 kilolitre tank for residual gas, cylinder storage, an office and parking.
If approved, the facility would be operated by ELGAS, in need of an appropriate base since it was forced out of its premises on Chatham Road, Hamilton. The company supplies 12,000 domestic and 3000 commercial customers across the Hunter.
The Kooragang site was preferred because it was in an established industrial precinct, zoned appropriately and "well away from sensitive receivers".
