SportsFest, the free event hosted every year by the Hunter Academy of Sport, will boast a number of different codes for kids to try, including athletics, AFL, golf, netball, softball, cricket and wheelchair sports.
“This event is not only for the young at age, it’s for the young at heart. I want dads, mums, older brothers, and younger brothers, younger sisters, and older sisters to come along, and enjoy themselves,” CEO of the Hunter Academy of Sport Brett O’Farrell said of SportsFest.
Held at National Park’s No. 5 and 6 Sportsground, the Hunter Academy of Sport seeks to educate and develop the region’s promising stars of sport, and motivate the local community to take up new sports.
“Try a sport or activity you have never done before,” O’Farrell said. “You can smash a squash ball into a cage, you can box, you can ride a horse, you can play a wheelchair sport, you can jump, run, throw, and have all your efforts recorded.”
“We have the support of the state sporting organizations which is a massive draw card for this event, and we are appreciative for them coming on-board to help.”
Those organisations include Athletics NSW, Netball NSW, Cricket NSW, AFL NSW, Jack Newton Junior Golf, Softball NSW and Wheelchair Sports NSW.
There will also be a rock climbing wall in the park, giving participants the opportunity to try one of the new sports that will be featured in the 2020 Olympic Games.
The full schedule of events will be listed on the Hunter Academy website, with activities held between 10am and 2pm on Sunday, October 8.
