The day is all about the general public taking a peek inside Islam, as it is practised in the suburbs of Newcastle.
Acting president of the Islamic Centre of Newcastle Ahmad Forugh Dorani said there were many misconceptions about Islam.
“It’s an opportunity to meet us and say ‘hello’”, Mr Dorani said. “The idea is to open the doors on a special day.
“It’s an opportunity to invite the whole of Newcastle to experience Islam. [To see] I am just a normal person who happens to be a Muslim. Muslims are normal people.”
On the agenda for the family friendly day is Islamic lectures, a question and answer session, Islamic exhibitions, a barbecue, sweets, henna tattooing, Arabic coffee and children’s activities.
Previous open days have attracted as many as 400 curious visitors.
It’s on October 28, from 10am until 4pm. The Wallsend Mosque is located at 6 Metcalfe Street. The Mayfield Mosque is at 5 Victoria Street.
