We are inviting nominations for Newcastle's 2018 Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year, and I encourage everyone to nominate someone you know who would be deserving of one of these special awards.
We are looking for inspirational role models who are working for positive change in our city, so that we can formally recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and groups.
This could be through the arts, science, engineering, sports or any other field of endeavour. The aim is not just to award people with high profiles, we want to hear about the quiet achievers who work tirelessly and often thanklessly to make the world a better place. This year, for the first time, there is an online entry option, making the process even easier. Hard-copy nomination forms can still be downloaded from council's website.
Last year's Citizen of the Year was Newcastle refugee advocate Sister Diana Santleben.
Nominations close at 5pm on December 11. For more information about the criteria for nominees visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au.
