The charging station was built by the Belmont Men’s Shed to a winning design that emerged from a competition run by the Lake Mac Youth Advisory Council.
The design is based on the Redhead Beach shark tower, an iconic Lake Macquarie landmark.
The sun-powered charging station was built for less than $2000, providing a low-cost, mobile, sustainable way to improve connectivity around the City.
Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Kay Fraser, said the pop-up solar charging station was a great example of Lake Macquarie’s digital economy strategy in action.
“Being a Smart City is all about using technology to provide our community with better services more efficiently,’ Cr Fraser said.
“The solar-powered charging station is a community-developed solution that will allow people to stay better connected at City events and could become a prototype for other charging stations around the City.”
The pop-up charging station will be in action at ChIPfest, the launch of the new Charlestown Innovation Precinct (ChIP) in Pearson Street Mall, on Thursday 30 November.
The free community consultation event, from 5-8.30pm, will feature food trucks, technology demonstrations, live music and more. For more information, visit: shape.lakemac.com.au/CHIP
