However, it has recently been descended upon by two new collectives who are out to make a difference to both the Newcastle music scene and the community around them.
The Y Project is a local group of young adults who host Civil Thrill events. These nights focus on providing a safe space to all-aged bands and punters, while also raising money for charities in the local community and abroad.
The second group, Lo-Fi, aims to give local, original musicians a stage that isn’t shared with Keno, TVs or pokies. With its bespoke bar, it caters for the up to 35s age group, and gives its profits to local charities.
“We want to give people of all ages with a chance to see original music in Newcastle, and we want to give original musicians and bands a chance to be heard without having to compete with some of the distractions that exist within a pub environment - a real focus on the music,” musician and founder Adam Price said.
On December 2 Lo-Fi will feature Flight Hawk, Sister Rosicky, Hchie, and Regina Kamada. It kicks off at 7pm. Entry is just $10.
