Lake Macquarie City Council has been working to upgrade access to the tidal pool at Blacksmiths for the past three months.
The improvements include an accessible, 350m-long shared pathway that connects the Grannies Pool car park to the existing pathway along the Swansea Channel breakwall, as well as resurfacing of the car park, a new concrete viewing area and an access path to the pool.
The Council’s acting manager community planning Wes Hain said a 40m-section of the Grannies Pool pathway has been built with world-leading recycling technology that uses reprocessed plastic waste and has a longer lifespan than a traditional timber boardwalk.
“The new path comprises a mix of concrete and recycled plastics, which provides a sturdy and long-lasting asset for the community,’’ Mr Hain said.
The new level pathway and platform are accessible to all users, including wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility, providing a view of Grannies Pool, the surrounding channel and access to the breakwall.
Bahtabah Land Council has also been involved in the project, with the installation of interpretive signage providing visitors with an insight into the story behind Swansea Heads, while 1600 new plants have enhanced the native vegetation in the area.
Council crews have also resealed the access road, off Ungala Road, with line marking to take place next year.
Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Kay Fraser, said the Grannies Pool improvements would be warmly welcomed and well-used by the community.
“With its calm water and stunning location, Grannies Pool has been a favourite spot for some local families for generations,” Cr Fraser said.
“Access has been challenging for some people in the past, so the improvements will enhance the amenity of the area and open up this much-loved secret spot for all to enjoy.”
