The volunteer organisation has partnered with Carrington Bowling Club to fundraise for solar panels for the much loved watering hole.
“There are a few goals this one is hitting for us,” convener of the community based organisation Su Morley said.
“It’s going to increase renewable energy on a community facility, and I personally feel really sad about all the bowling clubs that have been disappearing.
“So it strengthens a community asset.
“We have been looking for opportunities where we can help increase renewable energy, whether it’s raising funds, whatever the sticking point is.
“Sometimes they have the means to get it on, but they don’t have the confidence.
“They just needed help getting kick started.”
Carrington Bowling Club had as many at eight quotes to install solar panels over six years. However, the club was unsure about which company to go with and which array would best suit their requirements.
Bowlo CEO Jaci Lappin said a lot of the information she had received from solar installers about the best set up was contradictory and she felt unsure about who she could trust.
“Climate Action Newcastle is helping us to work through the decisions. I trust them, they are not lining their own pockets,” Ms Lappin said.
“I knew I was dealing with reputable people.”
Ms Lappin said she knew solar power for the club, which has an electricity bill of as much as $5000 a month, made sense.
“It will help keep the club viable,” Ms Lappin said. “With the savings we hope to be able to build a viewing deck for the sporting fields.”
The first step of the solar install project will be to “get the funds together”, Ms Morley said.
A fundraiser will be held at the club over the weekend of December 1-3, featuring a long line-up of local musicians.
The organisation will help guide the club with technical matters relating to the install.
“We have a few members who have a good understanding of renewable energy and will be able to help the club make decisions about what is needed,” Ms Morley said.
“Every dollar we make here on the roof is going to pay for itself for years.
“The club will save tens of thousands within a few years.
“That’s a lot of money for a little club.”
The club is looking to install a 50 kilowatt system, at a cost of about $1000 per kilowatt.
