However, a new group called NewCoh is looking to meet the challenge by building a co-housing community.

University of Newcastle lecturer and expert in environmental sustainability Dr Sidsel Grimstad describes co-housing as “a well- established European model that provides a solution to a range of social and housing problems”.

“Cohousing reduces costs of development for those involved and reduces the impact on the environment because of the shared use of resources,” Dr Grimstad said. 

“It’s also about lifestyle benefits, people choosing to live with others so that they can know their neighbours and build social cohesion”

Cohousing is sometimes a bit misunderstood, says NewCoh steering group member Kevin Fell.

“Our development will include separate and private dwellings for all members,” Mr Fell said.

“Shared spaces will be common areas, such as a community kitchen, laundry, vegetable gardens and recreational spaces. 

“We will also be involved in the landscape and building design so we can ensure our environmental footprint is as light as possible.”

NewCoh has reached out to organisations for support for their project.

They aim for a development of about 20 residential units within 10 kms of Newcastle CBD.  

NewCoh will hold an information session on Wednesday June 20, 5:30 – 7:00pm, in Rm x803 at NewSpace. It is open to anyone who would like to find out more about the project.
