Australian Idol winner Leith and ARIA-nominated band Thirsty Merc have been confirmed as headline acts at this year’s Lake Mac Carols at Speers Point Park.
The concert, to be held on December 9, has become the Lake’s biggest Christmas event and will feature an afternoon screening of family festive movie Christmas All Over Again as well as fireworks and a special appearance from the jolly man himself, Santa.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Cultural Services, Jacqui Hemsley, said landing Leith and Thirsty Merc was a coup for the event.
“Damien is an amazing vocal talent and has vast experience with live performance,” Ms Hemsley said.
“He won Australian Idol in 2006, has released an EP of Christmas Carols and has performed at Carols in the Domain.”
Thirsty Merc have been an Aussie rock institution for more than a decade, nominated for multiple APRA and ARIA awards.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the event which kicks off at noon with the movie screening.
The carols will start from 6.30pm.
Ms Hemsley said a range of food trucks and free entertainment would round out what was on offer.
“There will be live local entertainment throughout the day, before the carols kick off at 6.30pm,” Ms Hemsley said.
Meanwhile, The City of Newcastle Carols By Candlelight presented by Newcastle Herald and Newcastle Permanent will be held on December 14.
The event usually attracts thousands to King Edward Park, Newcastle.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelms will conduct the official opening at 7pm with a strong cast of local talent to follow.
Newcastle’s all female vocal ensemble Bella Voce will lead the entertainment.
Since forming in 2011, Bella Voce has participated in an array of different performances and recorded two EPs.
Carnival rides and food vans will be available throughout the evening and it wouldn’t be a Christmas carols event without the appearance of Santa.
The event will also support the Salvation Army Christmas Toy Appeal.
