The Jets' six-year winless streak against the Mariners continued on Saturday with a 3-1 loss at Central Coast Stadium.
Newcastle Jets coach Clayton Zane called in senior players Joel Griffiths and David Carney for the match in the hope that the streak would end.
It was the most experienced side the Jets' had fielded in years, but it was not enough.
Griffiths scored his sixth goal of the season in the 23rd minute, but Newcastle's luck stopped there. The Mariners closed in with three goals to leave the Jets bewildered.
With play-offs in sight, the Jets linger in seventh place on the A-League ladder.
The Newcastle Jets will play the Wellington Phoenix this Saturday, March 22, at Hunter Stadium at 5.30pm.
