The Kelton Street store is owned by Coles (Wesfarmers).
Coles closed the store in February with no explanation, leaving locals bewildered.
Earlier this year, The Star reported rumours had circulated that the site could become a housing development.
A spokeswoman for Coles said the decision to close the Cardiff Coles was part of a property review of the company's stores in Lake Macquarie.
"In September last year, Coles also created more than 20 new local jobs at its Warners Bay store, making it one of six new and improved stores in the region," the spokeswoman said.
However, the former Cardiff Bi-Lo site has not yet been sold.
The 6330 square-metre lot, which has on-site parking for 129 cars, was placed on the market on March 1 through Frank Knight.
It is zoned for commercial use under Lake Macquarie council's Local Environmental Plan 2004.
Frank Knight's Matt Kearney said parties interested in the site had expressed interest in developing mixed retail and residential buildings.
