The Knights lost 16-12 to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium last Saturday.
Playing without suspended prop Willie Mason and injured lock Jeremy Smith, Newcastle fought back from a 10-4 half-time deficit to lead 12-10 in the second half.
But a controversial try by Canterbury prop Aiden Tolman 10 minutes from full time proved the difference for the ladder leaders.
It was the Knights' third loss in their last four matches, but coach Wayne Bennett remained positive about the team's progress.
"Our last five weeks have been pretty good," Bennett said.
The Knights' next opponents are the Penrith Panthers at Hunter Stadium on Sunday, May 11 at 2pm.
