The six-time Golden Guitar winner is touring Australia with her hit show Doris, Doris Day - So Much More Than The Girl Next Door for the third time, including one night at Newcastle's Civic Theatre.
Schneider co-wrote the Doris Day homage with David Mitchell.
She tells the story of Day's life through her hit songs, including Que Sera, Sera and Everybody Loves a Lover.
Schneider said Day didn't write her own songs, and the cheerful and upbeat tones of her musical career often didn't reflect the true nature of her life at the time.
Day had four turbulent marriages, was abused and faced financial ruin while experiencing a successful singing and acting career, which included 39 Hollywood movies.
"Her life was full of ups and downs," Schneider said.
"She was heartbroken and lonely a lot of the time, so there are a lot of sad parts in the show.
"But we hope to make people laugh and cry, and tell the whole story of her life."
■ Melinda Schneider will perform Doris, Doris Day - So Much More Than The Girl Next Door on Saturday, May 31, at the Civic Theatre. Tickets are available from ticketek.com.au.
