Owner Nathan Tinkler has been in the spotlight since HSG defaulted on a $10.52 million bank guarantee as part of a privatisation deal in 2011.
Two months of confidential negotiations have failed to produce a resolution, prompting the Knights members' club to serve a notice of their intention to pursue their entitlement to buy the team back for $1.
Members' club chairman Nick Dan said HSG had shown no signs of complying with the buyback.
Ten rounds into the 2014 NRL season, the Knights have won a single game in half as many matches.
The Knights were preparing to meet with the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Monday night as The Star went to print.
