Taggart is the first Jets player to be selected for a World Cup.
He was expected to miss out, but Josh Kennedy's omission due to a back injury left the door wide open.
Taggart spent Monday, June 2, in the Socceroos' warm-up match against Brazilian division two side Parana Clube in place of the injured Kennedy.
Scoring in the 2-0 victory, he impressed coach Ange Postecoglou.
Taggart was one of seven A-League players to make the cut.
There was no room for Newcastle teammates Mark Birighitti and Josh Brilliante, who were both cut from the preliminary 30-man squad.
The Socceroos start Group B against Chile on Sunday, June 14, before matches against Holland on June 19 and Spain on June 24.
