The bid was accepted in a closed council meeting last Tuesday.

The building, which has stood since 1923, is across from the University of Newcastle's City Campus and Civic Park.

The council had previously indicated it wanted to subdivide the block to allow for future road widening or a cycleway and would call for expressions of interest to buy the land.
