Raid My Wardrobe founder Rachel Prest has joined forces with fellow Novocastrian Melissa Histon of The Sista Code – an online community that encourages women to uplift, inspire and support one another – to help women fleeing domestic violence.
The Sista Code movement is co-ordinated through a website, social media and events.
The market, which will be held this Sunday, March 13, at Newcastle Basketball Stadium, will be the first public outing for The Sista Code’s charity, Got Your Back Sista, which helps domestic violence victims start their lives afresh.
Market-goers are asked to bring along personal care items, which the charity will make into toiletry packs to distribute to women at local refuges, including Jenny’s Place in Newcastle.
Donations of shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, deodorant, moisturiser, toothbrushes and toothpaste can be dropped off at The Sista Code stand.
There will also be a donation bucket at the stand, as well as Sista Code t-shirts and inspirational books and cards for sale.
At the end of the day, market stallholders will donate leftover clothing, shoes and handbags to the charity.
Ms Prest said she had partnered with Got Your Back Sista because it generated awareness about the difficulties some women face.
“We [market stallholders] feel privileged knowing we are gifting women escaping domestic violence with essential clothing items that can assist with their self-dignity and worth during such a difficult time,” she said.
Ms Histon said the partnership was a generous gesture.
She said women often left violent partners with little more than the clothes on their backs.
“These donations are a start to help these women get back on her feet,” she said.
The market will feature 50 stalls packed with high-end clothing, shoes, handbags, jewellery and accessories.
Hundreds of pre-loved pieces – from brands like Sass & Bide, Veronika Maine, Allannah Hill and Mimco – will be up for grabs so there is something for everyone to mix and match their wardrobe as we transition from summer to autumn.
Entry is $5 at the door or pre-book online at raidmywardrobe.com.au or thesistacode.com.
