In preparation for a future extension of the promenade, an estimated 6200 tonnes of rock will be placed in the harbour along the 145-metre length of Lee 4 seawall – located on between Worth Place Park and Throsby Wharf on Honeysuckle Drive.
Works begin next Monday.
Hunter Development Corporation said the area would be closed to foot traffic and cyclists for the duration of the works, with diversions expected to be in place for more than three months.
“We know that the promenade is very popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists and want them to know about the planned diversion well in advance,” HDC acting general manager Valentina Misevska said.
Ms Misevska also said the western side of Worth Place Park would be closed.
Barbecue and play equipment will be moved eastwards, she said, with the park restored to its original condition after works are complete.
The work will ready the area for new development.
Last year, the prime 7300 square metre site at Lee Wharf was sold to the Doma Group.
