The Lovedale resident appears on the 2017 Australia Day honours list, receiving the Order of Australia Medal for his service to business, particularly in the education sector.
In a publishing career spanning almost five decades, Mr Hughes has held executive roles at companies including Harper Collins, Angus and Robertson and Scholastic (the world’s largest children’s publisher).
In 1991, Mr Hughes and his wife Carol established Lioncrest Education, a leading provider of learning materials for primary and secondary school children in Australia and New Zealand.
The company sources high-quality books and educational resources and brings them into schools, helping children develop reading skills from an early age.
The couple moved to Lovedale in 2002 and still run the publishing business from their property, where they also have a boutique winery and accommodation.
“Carol and I had a deep affection for the Hunter Valley – we love the lifestyle,” he said.
Mr Hughes said he was “totally surprised” to learn that he had been named on the Australia Day honours list.
“There are a lot more deserving people that me,” he said.
