The 26-year-old Brandy Hill woman was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at 17 and went through chemotherapy and radiation hell, losing her hair and her dignity.
Today, almost a decade on, Meredith is happy, healthy and cancer free and her long tresses are now her crowing glory.
On Sunday those luscious locks will again disappear when she shaves her head to raise money for cancer research.
Meredith will take part in Rutherford Hotel’s Shave for a Cure Family Fun Day.
“I was at Rutherford Hotel having lunch recently and one of the staff members who was drawing a raffle mentioned the day and I decided to take part,” she said. “My hair is down to my bra straps now so it’s pretty long. This is the first time I have done the shave and I’m hoping to raise over $1000,” Meredith said.
Event organiser Emma Rogers hopes well over $1000 will be raised on the day, which will feature a jumping castle, a mega raffle, sausage sizzle, egg and spoon races and party bags for the kids.
Meredith won’t be the only one to shed her hair. Some of the hotel’s regulars have stepped up and will both shave and colour their hair and facial hair. One of the pub’s locals, “Knoxy”, will shave his hair and well-cultivated beard if the $1000 mark is hit.
“This is a state-wide fundraiser and everyone is welcome,” Emma said.
Rutherford Hotel will match dollar-for-dollar what is raised on the day. The fun kicks off at 1pm.
