The State Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper MP, along with representatives from both Lake Macquarie and Newcastle City Councils were also in attendance.
Having operated from a small, council-leased shed in Toronto since inception in 1989, the move to larger premises at 6 Pennant Street, Cardiff has enabled HHM to expand and improve its service delivery model, quality of service and diversification of services on offer.
Hunter Home Modifications (HHM) is a not-for-profit community-based organisation that assists the frail, aged and people with disability to remain living at home by providing easy, affordable home modification solutions specific to individual needs.
HHM provides timely, practical and high quality services to their clients which include participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, My Aged Care and the general public.
The HHM team work in collaboration with clients or their advocate to design and build safer environments.
This enables the individual to carry out daily tasks safely and promotes independent living within the community.
In addition to its valued administration staff, HHM employs registered Occupational Therapists (OT’s), licensed builders and tradesmen.
Hunter Home Modification OT’s are the experts in Falls Risk Prevention and can advise on safe home practices and products that can make your home environment safer.
Their OT’s will review accessibility in and around your home, along with your ability to participate in everyday activities.
The assessment is comprehensive and will take into consideration any medical conditions, current medications, your skill level and the aspects of the environment that impact on the activity.
The OT will make recommendations tailored to suit your specific needs for independence, health and safety including modifications required for other in-house caregivers.
HHM’s OTs can prescribe equipment or recommend modifications to enable you to complete activities safely and independently.
Its fully qualified, licensed and insured tradesmen then play their role by installing aids and constructing modifications prescribed by OTs.
These builders and trade staff have over 28 years’ experience in prescription building and in that time, have assisted many elderly and people with disabilities in achieving a quality of lifestyle and level independence that they thought was beyond their reach.
Organising home modifications can seem daunting but with HHM, safer and independent living is only a phone call away.
You may call yourself or ask a friend, carer, relative, general practitioner, health professional or community service worker to contact us on your behalf.
HHM can advise and help with every step, from advising on My Aged Care and The National Disability Insurance scheme for eligible clients to arranging an accredited OT assessment through to design and construction.
Whether you require bathroom grab rails, access ramps or a full kitchen or bathroom modification, be confident that Hunter Home Modifications can help.
HHM operates five days a week, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. For further information phone (02) 4950 4275 or visit www.homemodificationservice.org.
