Hill, a devoted member of Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League, said she is looking forward to the opportunity to represent the “little clubs” in the area.
“Newcastle Rugby League is very focused on the first division districts competition that obviously the Bay isn't part of at the moment,” Hill said.
“For me [the appointment] is more about seeing Newcastle Rugby League as they grow their resources now with Wests taking on the Knights and the sale of assets with the leagues club, that little clubs that aren't represented in the system, are.
“It's about remembering that pathways start with the really little kids.”
Hill is passionate about “grassroots” development – not just putting “super talented” players in representative sides, but developing all players so that in the future older grades are well stocked and have plenty of reserves.
Hill’s involvement with rugby league is extensive. She said she has “always been around it”.
Her husband, Ji, plays the game, as does their two sons.
As well as a number of committee roles with Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League, Hill has a number of game day roles such as first aid officer and running the canteen.
To sit on the board of directors, Hill had to step down from the Nelson Bay committee.
In addition to her experience within the game, Hill is currently completing the last year of her law degree and also holds a Bachelor of Business degree.
Newcastle Rugby League said Hill’s appointment aligned with its strategic objective to establish a board of directors inclusive of the key stakeholders within the rugby league community and individuals with specific professional qualifications and skill sets.
Additionally, Newcastle Rugby League said Port Stephens is critical to the future of the game and Hill’s junior rugby league link in Nelson Bay will be invaluable, as will be her assistance in “maximising the opportunities that exist within the female participation market”.
“We are thrilled that Brooke accepted the offer to join the Newcastle Rugby League board of directors,” Newcastle Rugby League chief executive officer Matt Harris said.
“Brooke’s expertise in the field of law and business combined with her genuine love of the game will prove invaluable as we continue to champion change and address the associated challenges.”
Hill’s appointment comes as current directors Jason Allen and Kane Bradley decided to step down.
