But one look at the running sheet for this Saturday and Sunday would suggest that event organisers are set to deliver.
The feature event of the Lake Mac Big Weekend will be the fourth round of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships.
These are serious power boats who promise an exhilarating display of high-speed racing set against the picturesque backdrop of the lake and foreshore around Warners Bay.
Other popular vantage points will be around Eleebana and the Marmong Point foreshore reserve.
The Superboats will race on Saturday at 11am, and on Sunday at 11am and 1pm.
They are again expected to approach speeds of 200km/h.
But it’s not all about the Superboats.
There will be jet ski racing from the shores of Lions Park, in Eleebana.
On Saturday, the jet skis will get into endurance racing from 9.30am to 5pm. On Sunday, they’ll showcase circuit racing from 8.30am to 5pm.
And if you can’t wait for Saturday, check out the jet ski riders during a demonstration event at the Warners Bay foreshore on Friday from 5pm to 6pm. It will be followed by a free concert.
Marmong Point Sailing Club is offering free water sports on the lake for families on Saturday, from 10am to 3pm.
And the newly revamped Warners Bay foreshore (opposite the main shops) will come alive with markets, food stalls, children's amusements and live entertainment on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm.
The weekend will also feature a Food of the World fete.
Visitors are invited to follow their nose to enjoy the smells and tastes of international cuisines hosted by Lake Macquarie High School.
Matt Hall Racing will present four aerobatic displays over the weekend.
Many will recognise Matt Hall as one of the leading Red Bull Air Race World Championship pilots.
On Saturday, he’ll take to the skies over the lake at 11.45am and 2pm. On Sunday, see him in action at 9.45am and 11.45am.
Mayor Kay Fraser said it was an event well worth catching.
“After launching in 2016, it has quickly become one of the biggest events on our city calendar.”
