Did you lock your door when you left the house this morning? Do you leave lights on when you go out, to suggest that somebody might be at home? It is surprising how many of us don’t take these simple steps to secure our house and possessions when there is nobody at home.

A dark, unlocked house really is an open invitation to a thief, and if you don’t have your valuables marked with personal identification details, it can be very hard to recover them in the event of a burglary. These three simple anti-theft steps are the key message of a crime prevention campaign Lake Macquarie City Council is promoting: Lock it, Light it, Label it.
Sure, there are sophisticated home security systems that add extra layers of protection, but the police, our partners in this crime prevention campaign along with the NSW Government, tell us that if more people paid attention to the simple things, it would significantly reduce local burglary statistics.
Council staff will visit shopping centres in the next few months providing information about home security. Find out more about how to secure your home at lakemac.com.au/home-security
I would also like to welcome the new police Local Area Commander, Superintendent Danny Sullivan, to Lake Macquarie. The council looks forward to working with him and his officers on this and other local crime initiatives.
