NEXT UP at Gallery 139 is the third Director's Choice exhibition.

The annual show is all about celebrating great art in Newcastle, gallery director Ahn Wells said.

“It's my chance to completely curate an exhibition, to know exactly what artwork is coming into the gallery to create an exhibition,” Ms Wells said.

“It's one of the main reasons why I started Gallery 139 is because I love curating. So at the end of the year, I get to splurge and have some fun.”

"This year I have asked about 10 or so artists to be part of the exhibition.

It's so hard because there is so much good work out there, that I've seen during the year and I know so many artists that make work that I would love them to exhibit again in the gallery.

“It's about finding the right combination. It's the curating that both excites me and frightens me and keeps my self-motivation alive when times are hard."

Opens December 14 until December 23; opening December 16,  2-4pm.
