Flight Hawk made its debut in June 2017, and considers itself a work in development.
Embedded firmly within musical talent, most members of the band are multi-instrumentalists and with Zackari Watt at the helm, Flight Hawk crosses musical genres and delves into theatre, live-electronica and comedy.
“It’s probably some kind of glam sci-fi sort of thing,” Watt said. “We do have a performative agenda.
“We are not just standing up there for the simple sake of playing music.
“A big part of what we want to do is grab hold of the crowd and take them along on a journey with us.
“Like a collaborative journey, in a way.”
One of the gags in the performance sees a dozen or so keyboards brought onto the stage, by members of the audience.
The additional keyboards are required because keyboard player Jephthah Francis’ solo is so spectacular it can’t be contained to just one keyboard.
The sheer energy it takes for Francis to perform his solo renders him unconscious. He is taken off stage on a stretcher, again by members of the audience.
The band also uses costumes to push the bands “overblown, gratuitous glory” to limit. It is their hope the audience will get in the spirit of their show by also dressing up.
The plan is to continue to develop the act throughout 2018. They will be playing plenty of local shows during the year.
“Our longer term goal is to launch a touring show,” Watt said. “I feel that a show is where we are heading.
“We plan to tighten the set, integrate the new members and play as much as we can this year.”
The band already has had a few bites of interest from players in the industry willing to support a tour.
Flight Hawk are currently also working on six film clips. Francis is also a film maker and animator.
“A lot of his aspiration is to make some “glorious, gratuitous film clips,” Watt said of Francis’ vision.
They hope to release the first film-clip before mid-year.
The songs are written by Watt and Francis. Watt sings and plays a little bit of “shtick” guitar.
The rest of the lineup sees Dave Fulham on saxophone, Niamh Bellicanta on trumpet, and Tim Evans has recently joined the line-up.
Watt has also committed to sing one song a day for the rest of his life. He broadcasts each song every day on YouTube and Facebook.
