Australia Day is a good time to reflect on the things that make our community strong and the City of Lake Macquarie a great place to live. Undoubtedly, it is the people who make a place special, and I never cease to be amazed by those in our community who give generously and selflessly to help others.

The Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards is a rare opportunity to shine a spotlight on such people, and this year’s function, held on Monday night, was no exception. Our Citizen of the Year, Andreena Kardamis, is an outstanding example of someone who makes a difference by constantly putting up her hand to contribute, despite being only 23 years of age.
A former Young Citizen of the Year, Andreena could not accept her award in person on Monday night as she is in Bangkok starting a six-month appointment as a Youth Advocate for the United Nations. Andreena has served on the Lake Macquarie Youth Advisory Council, the Board of The Place, Charlestown Community Centre, is a Justice of the Peace and a mentor to young law students, among other things.
Similarly, Lake Macquarie’s Young Citizen of the Year, Teza Sankoorikal, has amassed an impressive record of achievement and community service in a short time. The 16-year-old is president of the Leo Club at Merewether High and facilitates fortnightly meetings where young people can discuss socially relevant issues.
