It’s been nearly four years since Loose & The Horny Chicks graced the stage, and in the current climate of the #MeToo movement, their return is more fitting than ever.

The late-90s punk band, boasting combinations of punk guitars and a brass section, will be headlining an evening of girl rock mayhem at the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel on March 31, titled Same Ol’ Bullshit.
They will be joined by a number of female punk bands including Spam and Bitchcraft, as well as newcomers Boudicca, who formed in 2017.
Loose bassist Amanda Roff, who was also a member of Bitchcraft, said she’s wondering “why we’re still on this” after the international #MeToo movement, and Camp Cope’s recent criticisms of the Falls Festival.
“It’s amazing what Camp Cope is doing, but it’s disappointing that we’re still trying to fix this because we were seeing this in the 90s,” she said.
“We’re struggling now in 2018 having to call out major festivals about the diversity of their line-ups, and that makes it all a bit depressing.
“That was on the forefront of our musical practice, getting people supportive of diversity, and I feel like we’re saying the same thing that we have been for years. I’m disappointed with the progress.”
Roff, who lives in Melbourne, revealed that beyond disappointments with “a lack of change”, she’s just looking forward to taking the stage alongside “friends that were so involved in her formative years”.
“It’s amazing that we’ve all been playing and making music together for more than twenty years and we can still come back and just have such a great time together,” Roff said.
“All the things we did more than two decades ago was such a great time that we are so excited to see each other.
“We’re not playing this gig cause we think we’re an ‘undiscovered artistic treasure’ – we’re playing this gig because we love each other, and that’s amazing.”
Alongside the veterans of the punk scene come Boudicca, the event’s fresh faces.
The band would “never have imagined playing alongside a lineup like this”, revealed bassist Tegan Kinder.
“It’s such a cool event to be a part of, it feels a bit surreal in a way because you never play with other females in bands that have been playing for a long time,” Kinder said.
“We would love to see more events like these, there’s a lot of good shows recently that have been focusing more on including females and non-binary people in the lineup.
“It’s getting better, but Newcastle still has a lot to bring to the table. There’s a long way to go.”
Same Ol’ Bullshit will kick off at the Lass from 7.30pm.
