Sydney saw its longest running hot spell for the month of April on Monday after recording nine consecutive days of temperatures reaching 25C or above.

While Sydney sizzled at 35.4 degrees Celsius, a record high for April, Newcastle residents enjoyed a balmy start to the working week at 33 degrees.

This was 10 degrees higher than the average maximum temperatures for the month, but not enough to beat the 1986 record of 36.8, according to data from Weatherzone.

Further up the valley Scone hit a top of 34 degrees, 0.8 short of the hottest April day on record in 2016. Singleton hit 35 on Monday, just 0.3 degrees off the month record high from 2016. Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens all recorded temperatures between 30 and 34 degrees on Monday.

The warm conditions are not expected to stick around into the weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a cold change for later in the week.

Cold fronts moving through southeastern Australia during Thursday and Friday are expected to bring milder conditions to the Hunter Region in their wakes.
