The state competition, organised by the Hunters in association with Cricket NSW and Hunter Malayalee Samajam Australia, will be a one-day event that will see the best of the region compete for the inaugural title.
Hosted at Smith Park, the tournament will be played in the fast-paced 10-over format, and will have $1,000 for the top spot on the line.
For captain of the Newcastle Hunters Aijo Issac, and a key organiser of the event, the April 15 event couldn’t be bigger.
“Being the hosts to such a big event, the level of excitement is high,” Issac said.
“We are looking forward to a great day of exciting cricket. With eight highly competitive teams, we are sure to have some thrillers.”
The Newcastle Hunters will be joined in Group B by the Wyong Warriors, Sydney Bluehawks and Kairali Thunders from Penrith, while Group A will be contested between KPR Sydney, Tamworth Country Boys, Gong Tuskers and Sydney Indians.
The club also welcomed the participation of the Cricket NSW, and Issac said the “affiliation has been seen as a big leap towards promoting cricket within the [Malayalee] community”.
“Thanks to Herman Lotey and Francis Walsh for playing key roles in engaging the Malayalee community, putting us in contact with Cricket NSW and basically making this event happen,” he added.
He also thanked Newcastle City Council for making the field available for the one-day event.
The grand final is pencilled in for 2.45pm. The runners-up on the day will also receive $500 prize money.
