Coming off a five-week break the Hurricanes were no match for the visiting Magpies, especially in the second-half after going into the break down 3-2.
“It wasn’t our greatest game of the year that’s for sure,” Hunter men’s coach Dan Robinson said.
“But after a break of almost five weeks I wasn’t too surprised. We just weren’t very sharp.”
The Hurricanes best individual performer was James Robinson, who scored two goals and was also strong defensively.
Both Hunter and Wests remain inside the top four on the competition ladder with two regular rounds remaining before the finals.
The Hunter women’s side were defeated 8-4 by competition frontrunners UNSW Wests Killer Whales at the same venue on Sunday.
Saturday’s back-to-back fixtures between the same clubs were called off because of lightning in Newcastle and will be rescheduled during the next fortnight.
