Sargeant, mum to Summer, 2, and baby Lillian, and Bec Tansey, founder of the Facebook page Newcastle Hunter Mums, will launch the I Got It From My Mumma podcast on April 29. Sponsored by The Little Unicorn childcare centres, it will drop weekly on newfm.com.au and via Apple podcasts.
Sargeant said her idea for it came from her love for Tansey’s Facebook page, which has 10,000 followers. The first podcast will feature Dave Lloyd and Tracey Jewel from The Bachelor and Married At First Sight.
Sargeant said the podcast was “like when you go into labour – you think ‘Oh my god!’ but you make it happen”.
““I've worked in radio for over ten years,” she added. “As a mum I feel like I turn the radio on and not enough people are talking about the struggle that is ‘mum-life’ these days. How are we meant to do it? Kids, work and still find time for a healthy relationship?
“We’ve created a radio show to help Newcastle and Hunter Mummas answer those questions, [as well as] talk about fun things, like the time your child did something interesting with the contents of their nappy [or] the best parks in Newcastle closest to the best coffee because we’re so tired.”
Sargeant also revealed she initially approached radio stations about the show, but interest wasn’t great due to a “narrow” market for content for mothers, leading the NEWFM presenter to the podcast format.
She also disagreed with the idea the market was “too small”.
“Everyone has a mum and it’s my opinion that the mums of Newcastle and the Hunter would appreciate a voice, and to hear about [things] that are interesting to them.”
The first podcast will be launched on April 29, available through NEWFM’s weekly podcast stream at newfm.com.au.
