Vice-Chancellor Professor Caroline McMillen said the ranking in the independent global university league table result was an “outstanding achievement that reflected the university’s international reputation for excellence in quality education, research and innovation”.
The 10-spot rise for the University marks a major growth of 84 places in the past four years, a steady rise that the vice-chancellor believes the institution is “justifiably proud” about.
“A world ranking at this level is testament to the hardworking staff across our disciplines who have collectively contributed to this great result,” Professor McMillen said.
“It pays tribute to our world-leading researchers who are developing innovative solutions to address the challenges facing communities in our regions and around the world; and our professional and teaching staff, who are passionate about delivering a positive learning environment and quality teaching to our students.”
The independent QS rankings is based off six indicators, with UON shining with “strong performances in the International Faculty and International Student indicators”, according to Professor McMillen.
“[The results] revealed the University’s success in attracting world-class researchers and international students to the institution,” she explained.
“We continue to draw outstanding staff who are making their mark as leaders and innovators in their professions or fields of endeavour. We are also extremely proud of our talented students, from all walks of life, who choose the University of Newcastle to pursue their educational aspirations.”
Professor McMillen also revealed the new ranking placed UON closer to its goal of breaking through to the top 200 universities by 2020.
“Today our staff, students and alumni, can join us in celebrating this valuable acknowledgment by QS of our performance among the world’s best,” she added.
The QS rankings are based on analyse of more than 97 million citations from more than 14 million papers, 126,000 survey responses from employers and academics and considers more than 4,000 universities before ranking 1000 of them. The QS World University Rankings 2019 covers 85 countries and this year includes 60 new entries.
