Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking public submissions to design colour “skins” for two custom-made steel table tennis tables to be installed on the foreshore at Warners Bay and outside Council’s Speers Point administration building.
Jacqui Hemsley, council’s manager for cultural services, said the tables were essentially a blank canvas to be seen by thousands of residents and visitors to the city.
“It’s an open design brief, so our panel of judges is open to anything people can dream up,” she said. “We want them to be visually spectacular pieces of public art, but keep in mind they will be working table tennis tables.”
One of the competition judges, acting city design coordinator Caroline Cook, said the Warners Bay table tennis table would further invigorate one of the most popular stretches of Lake Macquarie’s foreshore.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what people come up with to add some colour and flair,” Ms Cook said.
As well as adorning the outdoor table tennis equipment, winning designs will be printed on vinyl.
Entry is open to all ages, with the winning design to be awarded $500. Entries close on Friday, August 24.
