The newsletter has been a long trusted and popular periodical, keeping the residents, staff and visitors informed on all the excellent activities over the past few months.
Most importantly, it’s a chance for a resident to tell their story.
This quarter, 93-year-old Doreen Hewitt was passed the baton and gave her musings on life.
Born in Molong in Central West NSW, her rural and somewhat isolated life never stopped her from being a social butterfly.

Despite being one of only 30 students in her school, she regularly visited the central shops and chatted to the locals.
After school, she followed an unusual career, first working in a wool mill before becoming a psychiatric nurse at Kenmore Hospital for 16 years.
Outside of work, she was an athletic woman, enjoying tennis, hockey and above all, ballroom dancing. In her opinion, “there’s only one type of dancing”.
Doreen, a proud great grandmother, has been a resident at the Newcastle facility since September 2017.
The newsletter has been a great way to encourage talking points for the residents, Administration Officer Wendy Sheen says.
“It’s a chance for residents who are a bit shy or new to the facility to open up a bit,” she said.
While the facility has an extensive activity program, the newsletter complements the activities and reminds residents of good times past.
Recently, outdoor excursions returned with the first bus outing taking the residents on a scenic drive with a stop for ice-cream.
The Newcastle facility is also connected to the Hippocrates Australian Greek Aged Persons Association, where the elderly are invited weekly to participate in bingo games while having lunch.
The community also visits regularly, either as regular volunteers or through their local groups or schools.
