Good flathead are still being taken off soft plastics with local flathead gun Craig Walkom getting among some nice catches up to 90cm (as pictured). A lot of fish are lying in deeper water and as a result a lot are being taken by jew fisherman as by-catch.
Still plenty of jew being taken at night on whole bed squid baits for those willing to brave the chilly evenings. As for the squid they are still about in average numbers for those willing to put the effort in. Some reasonable kingfish also showing up around the drop over area.
The Channel still has salmon moving about. Beaches are a little bit slow with the main catch being salmon, tailor and bream. Further offshore squire and odd snapper are showing up on the reefs of Newcastle and further south off Wybung area. Lots of large kingfish off the wide perch grounds near Nora Head. These fish are responding to knife jigs. There are also schools of frigid mackerel and mac tuna working up and down the coast with reports still coming in of yellow and blue fin tuna being taken wide off the Continental shelf.
